The German Studies Program forms one half of the Department
of German and Russian. It offers a variety of courses in
language, literature, and culture. The faculty is part of a
network of scholars at the Claremont Colleges Consortium and
is actively committed to the teaching of German studies
across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences,
including International Relations, History, Philosophy,
Music, Literature, Linguistics, and others.
Pomona’s German Studies Program is fully coordinated with
the
Scripps College German Department to form a
Claremont-wide German Program that serves all five Claremont
colleges, allowing majors to choose from more than 50
courses per year in various subject areas. Both a major and
a minor in German Studies are offered. Faculty will work with students to address specific goals in their study of German.
German majors at Pomona have profited from their
education in a wide range of careers such as government
service, business, college or university teaching, and
journalism, in addition to being well prepared to work for a
number of non-profit organizations throughout the world. A
German minor often complements an IR major or other
internationally oriented studies.
We consider study abroad in one of the German-speaking
countries an integral aspect of the German Program, and the
majority of our majors and minors spend at least one
semester abroad. The quality of the German Program at Pomona
is, at least in part, a consequence of the knowledge,
energy, and enthusiasm of our students returning from
abroad.
Students of German at Pomona are encouraged to take
advantage of the many resources offered at the Oldenborg
Center for Modern Languages and International Relations, a
residence hall that allows students to immerse themselves in
the study of German (or any of six foreign languages housed
in residential clusters in Oldenborg). Most German majors
and minors spend a year in residence at Oldenborg, but any
student of German after his or her freshman year may apply
for housing in the German section at Oldenborg. In addition
to foreign language tables that meet for lunch five days a
week, the Oldenborg Center offers access to foreign
satellite television, computers, German tutoring, film
screenings, and numerous special events. Every year a young
visiting instructor from Germany is in residence at
Oldenborg, where s/he leads the daily German table,
organizes study breaks, conducts conversation classes, and
coordinates a variety of German-themed excursions and
extracurricular activities.
The German faculty at Pomona College are Hans J.
Rindisbacher, Department Chair, Friederike von Schwerin-High,
and Felix Kronenberg. The two Scripps faculty members are
Roswitha Burwick, the Distinguished Professor of Modern
Languages at Scripps College, and Marc Katz. |
